Trans-Rak Technology with Maersk Logistics Brings Benefit to Lotus

(Warwick, UK) - As an enhancement to its regular Felixstowe-Charleston transatlantic service, Maersk Logistics is now using Trans-Rak technology to ship Lotus Elise cars from the UK manufacturing plant in Norwich to Lotus' US Vehicle Processing Centre Brunswick, Georgia. Using two Trans-Rak frames fixed inside the container, five Lotus Elise vehicles fit neatly into a single 40ft high-cube box.

After being loaded and lashed in the container at the Lotus factory in Norwich, the cars are not handled again until they are discharged from the container at IAP, the manufacturer's US Processing Centre. This door-to-door system eliminates the possibility of damage caused by unfamiliar ro-ro stevedores driving them on and off vessels, or by weather and bird-lime.

"These specialist cars are valuable and attractive," explains Phil Holland, Head of Logistics at Lotus Cars. "We are therefore benefiting substantially from having them fully containerised".

Over the past 12 months, Maersk Logistics has invested in a fleet of 200 Trans-Rak units, with the system now proving to be both quick and efficient. Having overseen the new trade on both sides of the Atlantic, Roy Ince, the company's Business Development Manager, explains the benefits of the system. "This gives us new opportunities in the shipping of finished vehicle logistics," he says. "On the return leg, we are shipping racing cars, manufactured in Harrisburg, for the 600 Racing team in Europe."

With five cars being discharged in as little as 25 minutes, unloading the five cars is surprisingly quick. According to T J Norvell, Director of IAP, the Lotus appointed Vehicle Processing centre in Brunswick, the Trans-Raks simply wind down, using a hand-held Milwaukee drill. Once the cars are driven out of the container, the Trans-Raks then wind up into the top of the container, so that it is ready to load general cargo."
